This series consists of diverse indices to locally created registers.An index to birth register entries kept by the Deputy Registrar was required by An Act for Registering Births, Deaths, and Marriages in the Colony of Victoria 1853 no. 26.
XXIII. Every Deputy Registrar shall cause indexes of the Register Books in his office to be made and kept with the other Records of his office, and every person shall be entitled, at all reasonable hours to search the said indexes, and to have a certified copy of any entry or entries in the said Register Books, under the hand of the Deputy Registrar, on payment of the fees to be appointed as hereinbefore mentioned.
Information recorded includes: Surname, first name and entry number of the Register. The registration numbers in these registers differ from those allocated by the Registrar General on receipt of the quarterly returns from the local Registrars.
