This series comprises general correspondence files maintained by the Animal Industry Division (and Animal Research Division) of the Department of Agriculture (VA 618).

The Animal Industry Division was formed in 1966 from the Sheep, Beef, Cattle, Pigs and Poultry sections of the former Livestock Division together with the Pasture Branch of the Division of Agriculture. The Division was concerned with research and extension services for the livestock industries, except dairying, in respect of all aspects of animal production as well as the production and management of dryland pastures.

By 1976 an Animal Research Division had been established which was administered jointly with the Animal Industry Division.
