This series consists of lithographs of parish, township and selection plans published by the agencies responsible for the land survey function. The lithographs were pasted into a sequence of volumes most of which relate to plans relating to a specific county or counties. The only counties for which a volume was not created in whole or part are the Counties of Gladstone, Karkarooc and Tambo. Plans for these counties might be found within a volume within the series that bears no identifier. There are also volumes that cover areas, presumably from a time before these counties were finally established, that are identified as North of Talbot, West of Avoca and East of Campaspe. Another volume in the series shows electoral districts.It would appear the plans were compiled into these volumes for the benefit of parliamentary staff and elected members of parliament.
The number of plans contained in each volumes varies significantly. Some volumes contain only a small number of plans. This suggests the volumes were created in anticipation of the production of more plans than actually received.
From a sampling of plans in the volumes, it has been concluded that these volumes date from by 1856, three years after the Surveyor General’s Department created the first lithographic plans of surveyed areas. Plans appear to have been added to these volumes until at least 1882. Another sequence of volumes, confusingly titled Lithographic Plans (refer to VPRS 20603) was also created which spans part of the period covered by these volumes.
