This series was created following the passing of the Ombudsman Act 1973. Section 27 of the Act allows for challenges to the Ombudsman's jurisdiction to investigate certain matters, and for applications to be made to the Supreme Court to make determinations on the matter in question.

In the early 1970s the concept of the Ombudsman was very new in Australia. The Victorian Ombudsman office predates the Commonwealth office by several years and was the third state-appointed Ombudsman in Australia.

There are only 8 cases in this series and nearly all have a judgement. Applications under the act were then heard on the court’s Miscellaneous case list (VPRS 12024 and VPRS 13032). From 1990 onwards any challenges to the Ombudsman under s. 27 of the Act were heard in the Civil jurisdiction, as part of the judicial review list.
