The committee constantly monitored the hospital's drug expenditure and was responsible for imposing restrictions, as necessary, which maintained the service to patients whilst remaining within the confines of the budget.
The committee met six times per year. Most of its members were from the clinical areas of the hospital, but there was also Board of Management and administrative representation. The committee was described as a "sub-committee" until April 1981.
