This index contains all Crown Grantees between 1838 and 1862, at which time the Real Property Act 1862 was enacted and the system of issuing Crown Grants ceased. Landholders could still retain their Crown Grant after 1862, or convert their Grant into a Certificate of Title (see VPRS 460 Applications for Certificate of Title). Crown Grants were finally abolished in 1998. Full description

This series consists of the index to Crown Grant records. The series is collected in several bound volumes. The series provides access to VPRS 18874 Register of Crown Grants.

Crown Grants were issued for land that was alienated in Victoria under the General Law system, prior to 2 October 1862 and the introduction of the Torrens System. This index contains all Crown Grantees between 1838 and 1862, at which time the Real Property Act 1862 was enacted and the system of issuing Crown Grants ceased. Landholders could still retain their Crown Grant after 1862, or convert their Grant into a Certificate of Title (see VPRS 460 Applications for Certificate of Title). Crown Grants were finally abolished in 1998.

Each page has the following information:

  • Names: surname and then given name
  • Parish
  • Crown Description
  • Acreage
  • Crown Grant number
  • Year


The Crown Grant number and the year are then used to find the correct volume in VPRS 18874.
