VPRS 18468 Field Survey and Level Books Indexes

These records are partial indexes to the Survey, Field and Level Books held in VPRS 18342.

There are three alphabetical by line and/or location indexes covering the work of seven surveyors field books. The surveyors were W.H. Sherriff, F.L. Vial, N.A. Wigmore, R.F. Kinnane, J.Jones, M.A. Proctor and D.J. Burke. These are indexes by location (Line or nearest station), with a brief description of work done, field book number and page number.

There is an index (listing by contract number) construction contracts 428-3961 indicating line name and survey book. The line is recorded by original construction name (with some amendments in red) and a Number which may relate to original survey or construction survey books and original storage location.

There are two Survey Plan Register [Self -Indexed], which contain columns of plan number, Station/Line, Description. Although the plan number column appears to relate to plan numbers and field book numbers, nearest station or line (alphabetical) and description of the work done or information held. These are held in with this set as they relate to both the plans and surveyors field books.

Field Books Index 1984-1996 numbers 1 to 56 with the first section being an index by number, with work location, page number and date. The second section is and alphabetical index by (closest) station, description of job, date, surveyors initials, book and page reference.

Level Books Index 1984 to 1996- numbers 1 to 32 with the first section being an index by number, with work location, page number and date. The second section is an alphabetical index by (closest) station, description of job, date, surveyors initials, book and page reference.

These indexes were used to locate the survey, field and level books and the original data held within them about site and construction surveys required by Victorian Railways.

These need to be referred to when creating accurate line, curve and level diagrams, real estate transactions and positioning of infrastructure.
