Full description

The series contains copies of internal and published reports, and copies of legislation and correspondence covering a wide range of electoral related subjects.

Records in this series appear to have been accumulated by staff of the Chief Secretary's Department (VA 475) and the former State Electoral Office (VA 1061). The items in this series may have been drawn together for a research project or to provide a historical overview of state electoral matters.

All original recordkeeping systems have been lost. The items have been listed in chronological order. Oversized items can be found in Unit/Box 25.

There are a number of statistical reports on 19th century elections in this series. They are generally titled Electoral Returns. Electoral statistics post 1900 can be found in VPRS 18250/P01.

Some of the bundles clearly relate to identifiable electoral matters, e.g. the licensing polls of 1930 and 1938 and the referendum on hotel trading hours of 1956. Other bundles contained a mixture of loose papers from different date ranges, including loose copies of Acts, gazette notices and other printed material interspersed with discrete items of significant registered correspondence from different periods

In 1989 the statutory office of Electoral Commissioner assumed responsibility for the electoral function but the name of the agency did not change until 1995, when the SEO was renamed the Victorian Electoral Commission (VA 4196).
