It includes correspondence, assignments, tests, minutes of meetings and records that document how poorly, or well, the examination was completed by candidates. Examination papers relate to psychiatric nursing, mental retardation or mental deficiency nursing and nursing aide training. Papers can also relate to a particular subject such as Anatomy and Physiology, or Pyschiatry, be for a particular year of study or be for practical or theoretical nursing. There is one examination paper dated 9 October 1940 but otherwise the content of these files dated from 1953. The papers dated before 1960, and some after 1960, are headed Department of Mental Hygiene and include the words Departmental Examination in their titles whereas all other examination papers are headed Victorian Nursing Council (VNC). Full description

This series consists of files maintained by the head of the School of Nursing at the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital (VA 2842) in relation to the training for psychiatric nurses, mental retardation/mental deficiency nurses and nursing aides. This series is the remnants of a much larger system, that documented the management and delivery of nursing training at the hospital from 1960 to 1992 (when the hospital closed).

These files were created and maintained for reference purposes by the head of the school at the hospital. It is assumed that the head of the school of nursing at the hospital was involved in the wider activity of setting and evaluating examinations for nurses undertaken by the Victorian Nursing Council (VNC).

This series consists mostly of examination papersthat were either printed by the Victorian Government Printer or in-house, either at departmental or hospital level.

See Examination Papers (VPRS 16365) for VNC examination papers from 1960 to 1995, and 1990.
