VPRS 18047 Card Index to VPRS 18046, Plans and Section Books, Victorian Railway Lines

These index cards were used to control the records in the series of the Plan and Section Books of Victorian Railway Lines (VPRS 18046).

The index cards are arranged alphabetically by the name of the railway line (eg. Alberton-Woodside), and some railway lines may be divided up into sections, with each section having its own card (eg. Alberton - Won Wron Section).

Each card lists the record number of the Plan and Section Book and the physical location of the book within the archive (at Spotswood). Some of the cards also provide the locations of duplicate copies.

The primary information on the index cards is the:
- name of the railway line section,
- record number of the book,
- date of the book, and
- the location of the book.

Other information that may be on the cards includes the:

- contract number for the construction of the line,
- the type of plan,
- the office of origin,
- a brief description of the record, and
- the location of any duplicate records may also be included.

The record numbers are the numbers allocated to all records in the Victorian Railways Plan Room recordkeeping system which was a consecutive running number.

All of the records were indexed numerically in a large master card index. There were also typically smaller alphabetical card indexes of groups of records, such as in this series.
