VPRS 18040 Register of Railway Employees

Full description

This series consists of registers that were used to record railway employees of the Surveyor-General's Department (VA 2921), Department of Railways (VA 2877 & VA 2965), Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875), Victorian Railways (VA 2876) and Board of Land and Works (VA 744).

There does not appear to be any relationship between each of the volumes.

The first volume was possibly created by the Department of Railways (VA 2877). However, while references within date back to 1853, it is possible the volume was created much later.

The later volumes appear to belong to Victorian Railways (VA 2876) but possibly only contain reference to employees of branches within Victorian Railways, rather than being complete registers of the entire organisation.

Unfortunately there are no labels or titles on the registers to indicate where they originated, except for the second volume which has Chief Engineer for Railway Construction printed on the spine.

The contents and layout is different for each volume.

Volume one is arranged alphabetically and lists the name, position, date appointed, and salary.

Volume two is arranged by employee position, with an alphabetical index at the front. Information includes the date [of appointment?], name, address, age, previous service, remarks, and where sent.

Volume three is arranged alphabetically, and lists the name, grade, date of birth, date of permanent appointment, date of appointment to present position, salary, address, and remarks.

Volume four is arranged alphabetically and lists the name, position, address, and leave details.
