Full description
Malmsbury Youth Training Centre provided a secure residential facility and became the main centre for the department's Work Release Program for trainees. In 1976, Malmsbury provided supervision and support to some young offenders in transition to parole. This series contains cards, on which are recorded Malmsbury (VA 3960) client 'Work Out' (work experience) information. Malmsbury was a youth training centre for males aged between 17 and 21 years old. Participating in the work release/work experience program was a requirement of the Malmsbury trainees. A trainee was defined in the Social Welfare Act 1960 (section 41 (1)) as any young person detained in any youth training centre.
The cards have multiple sub-headings which explain the work out/work experience that a Malmsbury client undertook during their time as a trainee. Work Out/Work experience positions were typically labouring and/factory roles. A record of client attendance history was noted, presumably by Malmsbury staff who were responsible for overseeing the client work experience program.
Note that the dates of birth of clients are known, however the series date ranges are an approximation.
