This series comprises of volumes detailing voluntary male and female patient admissions to Ballarat Hospital for the Insane (1914-1934) and Ballarat Mental Hospital (1934-1969) (VA 2844).

The Register of Patients: Voluntary Boarders volumes include:
- admission number
- name
- date of reception
- marital status
- age
- occupation
- address
- form of mental disorder
- period of residence agreed
- discharge / death details

A remarks field is also used to mainly record religion but also contains information regarding cost and relative details for some entries.
