The register of inward correspondence was maintained as part of the recordkeeping system to manage council correspondence that was the responsibility of the Shire Engineer. As each item of correspondence was received by the Council, it was registered using the next available registration number in the Register.
Information about each item of correspondence was recorded in the Register. This included the date of receipt, from whom the letter was sent, a summary of the subject matter of the correspondence and, in some instances, the correspondence file to which the item was attached. The relevant series for locating items of correspondence is General Correspondence Files, Alpha-Numeric System.
The register is indexed. This enables researchers to establish whether particular items of correspondence were received.
