Full description

Prior to the early 1880s measurement of water course levels were not carried out in a systematic way in Victoria. Following the 1881-85 Royal Commission on Water Supply, continuous measurements were progressively taken on a number of Victorian water courses. This work was initially undertaken by the Victorian Water Supply Department (VA 2787) until the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723) assumption the function in 1906. Since this time measurements have been undertaken for the government by a succession of agencies until the function was privatised in 1994 and Thiess Services Pty Ltd assumed the role of taking measurements.

The records in this series are a continuous reading, generally monthly, of water flow at a particular site on a Victorian water course, known as a gauging station. Measurements have generally been taken by Hydrographers at the particular site. The flow data was recorded on a standard form at the time the reading was taken. These forms have been maintained in small bundles for each gauging station and are arranged in station number order.
