Since this time measurements have been undertaken for the government by a succession of agencies until the function was privatised in 1994 and Thiess Services Pty Ltd assumed the role of taking measurements.The files in this series contain daily continuous readings of water level data at a particular site on a Victorian water course, known as a gauging station. This data is presented in a range of formats from tabulated data to charts. From the early 1960s only water level charts are on file. Files may also contain rainfall and/or temperature data and correspondence relating to the particular gauging station. Full description

Prior to the early 1880s measurement of water course levels were not carried out in a systematic way in Victoria. Following the 1881-85 Royal Commission on Water Supply, continuous measurements were progressively taken on a number of Victorian water courses. This work was initially undertaken by the Victorian Water Supply Department (VA 2787) until the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723) assumption the function in 1906. Since this time measurements have been undertaken for the government by a succession of agencies until the function was privatised in 1994 and Thiess Services Pty Ltd assumed the role of taking measurements.
