Full description
This series consists of a small, gold edged notebook, entitled 'Notes on Nursing'. It is inscribed on the first page 'Rose Vaughan of Walsh Street, South Yarra, November 1886'. Below this entry is another for 'Rose A. Noel Richards, Llangollen, Murphy Street, South Yarra, October 1905'. Presumably Rose Vaughan is Rose Richards' maiden name. This indicates continued use of the notebook following her marriage. Mrs Noel Richards was on the Royal Children's Hospital Committee of Management from August 1905 to 1924, and was appointed a Life Member of the Committee in 1924.Information in the notebook covers a wide range of topics, and includes for example, a list of the duties of a nurse, instructions for making beds and dressing patients, how to recognise symptoms and body temperatures, how to treat bed sores and poultices, and recipes for beef tea and gruel. There are also lists of the nursing and domestic staff at the time, and a list of wages.
Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Archives. They were part of RCH accession number 2000/0002.
