VPRS 16626 Court of Requests Day Book (1850 - 1857): Stock Book of Electoral Lists and Rolls (1859 - 1873)

This volume was used by the Colac Courts for two different purposes. From the front of the volume, the volume records details of actions brought before the Court of Requests. Pages from the rear of the volume were subsequently used to keep track of the stock held of Electoral Lists and Rolls.

Court of Requests Day Book (date range 25 March 1850 - ?28 September 1857)

The Court of Requests exercised a civil jurisdiction for actions where the amount in dispute is for a maximum amount of ten pounds.

Entries record the date of the action, a prose description of the summons sought by the plaintiff, the amount in dispute and an indication of whether the summons was granted or dismissed. Each entry is also signed by the Court Registrar. Sitting days are also identified.

The final dated entry is for the second last entry in the volume and is dated September 26 1857. An entry intended for 28 September is left blank and a final entry is undated. It is unclear whether another volume was created. The first cause list book of the Colac Court of Petty Sessions in PROV custody dates from 21 March 1860 (refer to VPRS 301/P0, unit 25) and the existence of any volumes for the interim period is currently unknown with the exception of what appears to be a deposition book held by Duke University in the United States. Duke University has digitised the record in question and the image is available on their website.

Stock Book of Electoral Lists and Rolls (date range 1859 - 1873)

The final pages in the volume were used as a record of the distribution of these documents. Entries were made on either page of a folio. The left hand page was used to record the receipt of copies for distribution. The right hand page was used to indicate to whom the documents were distributed.

This part of the volume does not contain any electoral lists or rolls.

This series was held in private hands and was received by PROV in December 2010.
