The Mothercraft Nurses Act 1949 (No. 5413) was the earliest legislation relating to mothercraft nursing in Victoria. Prior to this the Maternal and Child Hygiene branch of the Department of Health (VA 695) issued certificates of competency for mothercraft nurses.

This register appears to be a record of training undertaken by potential mothercraft nurses, dating prior to State registration. Entries continue until 1954, meaning there is a period of overlap (1951-1954) between this register and the Mothercraft Nurses Register (VPRS 16427) established under the Mothercraft Nurses Act 1949. This register records the date that training was completed and the Mothercraft Nurses Register records the date of registration (including registration number).
