VPRS 15917 Health Register

Full description

This series known as a Health Register or a Registered Premises Register, provides a record of the registration of all properties and businesses required to be registered under the Health Act of 1919 (no. 3041) and subsequent legislation. The proprietor was required to apply for registration and pay a registration fee as required. The local council could, if it chose to, inspect the premises and order any improvements to be made before it granted registration.

Each entry usually gives details of the date of application for registration, name of the proprietor, the specific purpose for which the premises are used, date registration granted and details of the transfer of registration to another proprietor.

These records have been identified as permanent under section 12.3.1 of the Public Record Office's Local Government Records General Disposal Schedule (PROS 98/01 Version 2002).

Registrations in the P1 consignment include ice-cream and soft drinks manufacturers, factories and shops in which food was manufactured and/or sold, and eating houses (other than licensed victuallers).

Information included in the register was:
- date of application
- number of application; registration number; number of certificate of registration
- name and address of proprietor
- whether owner or occupier
- situation of premises
- conditions imposed (if any) on the granting of registration
- date of transfer
- name and address of person to whom transferred
- premises to which registration was transferred
- remarks.
