From 1875, District Surveyors were instructed to keep a journal of matters dealt with by them in their districts. This series consists of that kept at Omeo. Details given are the correspondence number (either for a land file or another matter), the particulars of the case (being given as the name of the individual or organisation concerned) and an account of how the case was dealt with.Instructions from the Assistant Surveyor - General were to complete these details in the Journal with details of the original minute or referral to be entered followed with entries for any subsequent actions taken with respect to the case. All entries were to have appropriate references to preceding and subsequent entries to do with the same matter. All entries were to be indexed by names and folio numbers.
Matters dealt with included the surveying of areas for Crown reserves and grants for special purposes (such as schools) for arbitrating on matters to do with access to water resources in reserves and the alignment of roads, to withdraw licenses to occupy from those not fulfilling terms of selection and the re-surveying of boundaries where there were disputes or mistakes had been made.
