This series consists of a set of cards containing mining production statistics for individual mines created by the Mines Department (VA 612).Information recorded on the cards includes the mine name, reef name, mining district, the division of the mining district, the year of mining, the total number of tons of quartz that was crushed, the total number of ounces of gold yielded, the pennyweight (Dwt), particulars, remarks, bibliography of reports containing the particulars of workings, and any general comments.
The pennyweight (Dwt) was an ancient weight based on the weight of a silver penny. It was often used to measure substances such as gold or arsenic and roughly corresponded to one twentieth of an ounce.
Comments and remarks included such things as the date the mine closed, the depth reached by the mine, the dividend yielded, reasons why the mine was closed and so on.
