By 1919 the Department was using file numbers up to five figures long.This file was never top numbered into the subsequent annual single number filing system. (For subsequent series refer to VPRS 11563 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number system). Full description

This series comprises a single extant file. The file is 7449 Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works and the Upper Yarra Watershed. It includes some maps relevant to the subject.

The State Forests Department was formed in 1908. Under a new filing system that came into use a few years later, the Department numbered its incoming correspondence sequentially from 1 upwards. A registration number was given to the first letter received on a subject. Subsequent correspondence on the same matter was either filed under the original number or allocated a higher number that could then become the new top number of the file. By 1919 the Department was using file numbers up to five figures long.

This file was never top numbered into the subsequent annual single number filing system. (For subsequent series refer to VPRS 11563 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number system). VPRS 10568 also contains files created under the annual single number system, as at Jan 2005.

Files created under the single number system that were top numbered into the annual single number system are currently located in another series VPRS 1472 (As at Jan. 2005).
