VPRS 14340 Register of Inward Correspondence, Local, Bendigo District Land Office

Full description

This series consists of the register of inward correspondence maintained at the Bendigo District Land Office. At the District Office, correspondence was received both directly and on reference from the Melbourne Office of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538). Details able to be entered in the register are the local office number, the date received, the Head Office number, the name of the correspondent, the subject of the correspondence, any instructions from Head Office for action by the District Land Office or instructions for action on local pieces of correspondence and how the correspondence was disposed of.

For the period 1876-1892, the Bendigo District land Office registered locally originating correspondence separately fronm that forwarded from Head Office. The details entered are the same. Correspondence might eventually be forwarded to local land officers anfd those in other districts or might be forwarded to Head Office in Melbourne for eventual attachment to a file. Matters in the correspondence related to applications, payments of rents and fees, survey matters and correspondence relating to the administration of the District Land Office.

For the years prior to 1876 and after 1892, local and Head Office correspondence was recorded in the same register (see VPRS 14339 and VPRS 14342).
