This series consists of records of correspondence which had been received by the Board of Land and Works and referred by them to the responsible officials within the Departments dealing with the matters for which the Board was responsible. These meant reference was made regarding lands and survey to the Assistant Surveyor-General and the Assistant Commissioner for Lands, to the Public Works Department (VA 666) and the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964). Original letters may already have been referred to the Board of Land and Works by other officials such as the Secretary for Mines and the Chief Secretary so often the reply was to return the correspondence to those officials. Other replies included forwarding to other officials for noting or action to be taken.Details recorded are the name of the correspondent and any reference number on the correpondence, the person or official to whom the matter was referred and the content of any reference comment placed on the letter and the reply. The reply consisted of any further annotation placed on the correspondence prior to its return. Original letters may already have been referred to the Board of Land and Works by other officials such as the Secretary for Mines and the Chief Secretary so often the reference comment was directed to the originator of the reference.
Matters dealt with related to the progress and provision of public works, the provision of roads and bridges, payments, the provision of facilities for indigenous people, matters relating to surveys and applications for land.
