This series consists of volumes in which were recorded correspondence which had been referred by the Board of Land and Works to the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (often the Assistant Commissioner for Lands or the Surveyor-General) or to the President of the Board of Land and Works in relation to land and survey matters. Reference could be made for the conveying of information or seeking an opinion on the response or action which might be taken.Details recorded are the name of the correspondent and any reference number on the correspondence, a summary of the subject of the matter, the reference in which was recorded the person or official to whom the matter was referred and the content of any reference comment placed on the letter and the reply. The reply consisted of any further annotation placed on the correspondence prior to its return. Original letters may already have been referred to the Board of Land and Works by other officials such as the Secretary for Mines and the Chief Secretary so often the reply was to return the correspondence to those officials. Other replies included forwarding to other officials for noting or action to be taken.
