The report included a list of school staff with their class of registration and registered number, a summary of the attendance at the school and a report upon the organisation of the school and the instruction given, the grounds, buildings and equipment with any recommendations by the inspector. Some files may include correspondence both inwards and outwards between the school and the Council with respect to the inspection.The last unit in this series, as well as correspondence regarding the continuing registration of a training institution also includes teacher registration application files for Numbers 14801 to 14875 (see VPRS 10061 Teachers Registration Files) and a file of correspondence of the Council itself. The records in this series consist of files maintained by the Council of Public Education (VA 2310) in relation to the registration of schools, teacher training institutions and teachers.

Teacher training institutions included Mercer House, the Kindergarten Training College and training institutions conducted by religious organisations in both Sydney and Melbourne. Files contain correspondence and matters pertaining to the relationship between the Council and the institution over a number of years.
