Full description

This series consists of the master set of examination papers for Swinburne Technical College (VA 1217) from 1927 until 1975, when the College was divided into separate administrative bodies covering TAFE and Higher Education.

Both internal and external examinations were held at Swinburne Technical College. External examinations were drafted by the Education Department and assigned an examination number. Internal examinations were not assigned a number, and were drafted by Swinburne Technical College.

Examination papers within the series reflect the development of Swinburne, and cover the boys and girls junior schools as well as the trade and diploma divisions of the Technical College. Subjects covered include architecture, blacksmithing, housewifery, ladies tailoring, plumbing, shorthand, and typing.

Arising from the Martin Report 1965, the Federal Government introduced matching financial grants to colleges of advanced education. The Victoria Institute of Colleges (VA 571) was established and Swinburne became an affiliated college.

This form of funding for tertiary education necessitated a separation of tertiary from non-tertiary courses. Although Swinburne had been separating their examination papers into Diploma and Trade divisions since 1956, this separation prompted the college to divide itself administratively into two companies. These two companies, Swinburne College of TAFE (VA 4668) and Swinburne Institute of Technology (VA 1192) continued to produce examination papers (see VPRS 14116 - Examination Papers [Higher Education Division] and VPRS 14117 - Examination Papers [TAFE Division]).

Student results for the examinations held using this series are located in VPRS 14019 - Examination Results.

The Education Department (VA 714) also kept examination papers used by various Technical Schools (see VPRS 922).
