Full description
This series consists of the minutes of proceedings of the Railway Classification Board's meetings in its Federal jurisdiction. At its first such meeting, on 25 January 1937, it was stated that the new Board was 'a tribunal clothed with added powers and new responsibilities by the Federal Court to act as an instrument to settle certain disputes which are often before the Federal Court and to make reports to the Federal Court in the settlement of those questions'. It was initially envisaged that the Board would operate for a period of two years. The Board in its Federal jurisdiction handled claims of the Australian Railways Union (with the exception of Professional Officers that worked under a separate arbitration court award) and the Federation of Salaried Officers. In 1937 the total number of grades requiring reclassification was more than 500, in addition to working conditions reviews that demanded the Board's attention.
