Full description

The Melbourne Public Library was governed at this time by a Board of Trustees responsible for the management and control of the Public Library, the National Museum, the Industrial and Technology Museum and the National Gallery. The plan for the buildings was that they would be constructed in stages as money became available. In 1868 the tenders for construction of the Great Hall were called for and this record would have been one of those forwarded to the Trustees.

Although very ornate in presentation and with the extent of detail expected in a tender for a major public building, this document is incomplete. There are no signatures by clients indicating that this was not the successful tender. The calligraphy and detail drawings for the latter portion of the document are also incomplete.
