This series records hire purchase agreements made between the Closer Settlement Board (and later Commission) and settlers under the Closer Settlement and Discharged Soldiers Settlement Acts. Settlers could acquire tools and farm equipment and household necessities through these agreements. Details given in the register are the number of the agreement, the date of the entry in the register, the Correspondence Number and/or the Discharged Soldiers Lease Number, the articles included in the agreement, remarks and the date of discharge of the agreement.Under Section 5 of the Closer Settlement Act 1918 (with provisions applicable to closer and dicharged soldier settlers) the Board was able to use the Closer Settlements Fund for the purchase of plant and equipment, seeds and live stock and other such things as were seen as necessary for the carrying out of the purposes of the Act. These purchases could then be resold by the Board under hire purchase agreement to settlers who required them.
