This series was created by the Colonial Secretarys Office (VA 856), the Department of Crown Lands (VA 2878) and the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538).

The series documents the details of Crown Grants issued between 1851 and 1858. It relates to Crown Grants issued as a result of the purchase of land by public auction as at that time it was the main form of obtaining a freehold title. However it also contains details of grants issued under pre-emptive rights, selections and for special purposes such as school and church grants.

These registers provide the following details:

Date of Sale
Grantees Name
Particulars of purchased land - Town/Parish; Allotment and Section
Date of Deed of Grant

Entries in the registers are made in chronological order by the date of sale by auction. Between 1851 and 1855/1856 separate registers were created for Crown Grants issued for Town and Country lands. These volumes include an alphabetical index to places of sale and the department also created a separate - Name Index to Register of Crown Grants (see VPRS 11867).
