The State Film Centre was established in December 1946. The files indicate that this record keeping system commenced in 1952. Prior to that date correspondence was filed according to subject. Some correspondence in existence prior to 1952 was top-numbered onto these files and some files do not include file titles.

Under the Cinemedia Corporation Act 1997 the Cinemedia Corporation became the successor in law to the State Film Centre of Victoria Council.
