This series was created to record the daily activities of a prison governor. These activities can include details of incidents within the prison, prison muster details and appointments.

It should also be noted that the senior prison officer on duty during the night shift is considered to be the acting Governor during the night shift. As a consequence of this the night diaries have also been retained permanently. There may also be an overlap of dates of the diaries.

Researchers should note that the detail within each diary varies from governor to governor. Some governors write detailed entries, while others write only very brief entries.
