VPRS 1169 Register of Orders in Council

Full description

This series is a register which provides a record of Orders-in-Council made following submissions from the Premiers Office. Many of the entries relate to Victorian public servants (the Public Service Board [VA 886] operated within the Premiers Office until 1894 when its staff were transferred to the Chief Secretarys Department [VA 475]). For example, under the Public Service Restraint Act 1888, in order for a public servant to do work outside their ordinary hours (such as working as an examiner at a university), express permission had to be obtained from the Governor in the form of an Order-in-Council in the Government Gazette.

An entry was made in the Register as approval from the Governor-in-Council was received. This series records the P No (ie the annual single number allocated to the notice of approval upon receipt see VPRS 1164 Register of Inward Correspondence), the date of the Order-in-Council, the No in Press Copy Book (ie the annual single number allocated to the outward correspondence sent to the Governor-in-Council when the agency made its submission see VPRS 1161 Outward Registered Correspondence), the relevant Department and a brief Description of the Order-in-Council.

The P No can be used to access the inward correspondence file in VPRS 1163, which contains the original submission from the Premiers Office, the approval of the Governor-in-Council and a copy of the item in the Government Gazette.
