Full description

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744). Both agencies had responsibilities for the co-ordination of works undertaken by the District Roads Boards.

This series provides a record of the exercise of this function prior to the changes brought about by the Local Government Act 1863. For each District Roads Board, across a double folio, details are given of the names of the Chairman and Secretary of the Board, of the amount of grant money to be paid to that Board, a record of the twice-yearly payments made, and the details of expenditure vouchers and debtors.
