It was an annual single number system with a limit of nine (9) parts to a file. This record series constitutes the general correspondence registered by the National Parks Service during the period 1976-1984. Contents within the files may date from 1956 due to top-numbering from the previous record series. Contents within some files continue until 1994 due to subsequent agencies placing papers on some files rather than registering new files under the subsequent system.

It is estimated that 20-30% of all files registered in the previous record series VPRS 11552 General Correspondence Files, Multiple Number System, 1956-1976 were top-numbered into this record series. Files within this record series were likewise top-numbered into the subsequent record series by the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands.

Files have been culled from this record series in accordance with the provisions of disposal schedule (NST 10) issued by the Keeper of Public Records in 1980.
