The following broad categories of documents were created: -Correspondence files relating to either the actual investigation or organisational aspects of the inquiry.Background papers comprising copies of printed material, reports etc gathered by the Committee in the course of research.Documents relating to the registration of consultants by the Salinity Committee.Submissions tended by individuals or organisations during the investigation stating their views on the issues concerned.Transcripts of public hearings held as part the inquiries. This series comprises a variety of records collected or created by the Joint Select Committee on Salinity and the Public Works Committee in the course of their investigations relating to the Salinity of Victorian lands and waters. The Joint Select Committee of Salinity was initially established in 1982 to conduct an inquiry under identical terms of reference of a inquiry conducted by the Public Works Committee between 1975 and its abolition in 1982.

The P1 consignment comprises records which were created by the Joint Select Committee on Salinity and the P2 consignment comprises records relating to the inquiry conducted by the Public Works Committee which were inherited and used by the Salinity Committee.
