The register is a compilation of students who passed all the subjects in the sixth grade examination between the years 1891 and 1898 and were subsequently presented with a certificate of merit.

The register lists a sequential certificate number (beginning at #1 to #5678), name of student, age of student (in years and months), school examined at, school number, date of examination and the name of Inspector.

There are blocks of numbers in the register that have been left blank, presumably set aside for students from a particular school, but not filled in due to failure of examination, or non-attendance at examination.
