The TAFE Accreditation Board was responsible for accrediting courses and advised the TAFE Board to place a course on the Register of Accredited Courses.Accreditation was important to ensure portability of qualifications between institutions and recognition of the award throughout the State.The Register provided a listing of courses accredited. It was updated every six months.Responsibility for state accreditation was transferred to the Victorian Post-Secondary Education Commission from 1987-1990, responsibility then passed to the State Training Board from 1991. This series comprises a Register of Accredited Courses for Technical and Further Education (TAFE) providers throughout Victoria.

The TAFE Accreditation Board was established under the Post-Secondary Education (Amendment) Act 1983, proclaimed on 28 June 1983. The TAFE Accreditation Board was responsible for accreditation of all state wide courses in TAFE. A state wide course was defined under the Act as a study program in technical and further education which leads to a qualification which the TAFE Accreditation Board recognises as a state wide qualification in a written notice to the TAFE Board.
