The Superintendent of Bridges was first appointed in 1844 with responsibility for a range of public works, including roads and bridges. After separation from New South Wales in 1851, the Superintendent of Bridges was jointly responsible with the Colonial Engineer for roads and bridges. In 1853, the Central Road Board (VA 2803) was formed to accept responsibility for that function.The records in this series are the copies of the outwards correspondence of David Lennox, Superintendent of Bridges, dealing with the listing of construction and maintenance works, the payment for works and the arrangements necessary for works to proceed.
