Full description

The Government Statists position was created in 1873 for the purpose of compiling and publishing statistical information. The Office of the Government Statist (VA 989) took over the function from the Registrar-General and was responsible for the registry, statistical and actuarial functions of the State. The Office of the Government Statist and Actuary is constituted under the Statistics Act 1958.

This series comprises general files which contain incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to the activities of the office. Separate files were created for each organisation coming in contact with the Office of the Government Statist and for select subjects.
