This series is the register of outward correspondence for the Central Roads Board (VA 2803) (1853-1858), Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) (1858-1871), and Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875), Secretarys Branch (1871-1876). It records the General Number of the correspondence (a consecutive number), date of dispatch, and the letter book number. During the Central Roads Board period the Branch Number and the name or office or organisation to which the correspondence was addressed is recorded. The Branch Number is a second consecutive number preceded by the letter E, S or T placed on each piece of correspondence. These letters signified the Branch within the Central Roads Board that originated the correspondence being:

T Treasurers Branch
E Inspector- Generals Branch.
