This series provides an index to the correspondence registered in VPRS Register of Correspondence I. Details include the registered number, the name of the correspondent and a very brief statement of the subject of the correspondence.

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).

Little correspondence appears to have survived from the Department of Roads and Bridges. VPRS 384 General Correspondence Files Annual Single Number System I, which commenced in 1877, comprises a small amount of correspondence from 1858 to 1871 which would appear to be a remnant of the correspondence registered within the earlier system.
