At the period of time covered by this series, tenderers for government contracts for the supply of goods or the completion of works were required to put up a cash bond from themselves and from two reputable persons as surety for the completion of the contract or the supply of the goods.

On the outside of each document in this series are given the name of the contractor and the names of the persons acting as sureties. Inside the documents may be found the tender document including the specifications for the contract, the document setting out the bond entered into by the contractor and the sureties and may include the covering letter forwarded by the tenderer giving the amount of the tender and the names of the sureties.
