Upon registration a face sheet was placed on the piece of correspondence giving a summary of the subject, the registered number, the date of receipt and any other file number which was most often the registered number of the previous piece of correspondence on the same subject. This sheet was also used for annotations by officers responsible for actions on the matter and may contain the substance or a rough draft of any reply.The file number on the cover sheet was used to record the number of any previous piece of correspondence relating to this subject. All pieces of top-numbered correspondence received on the subject were collated together to form a file. Full description

This series consists of correpondence files from the Land Sales Branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538). This Branch dealt with sales and purchases of land whether under various sections of the Land Acts or related to Unused Roads and Water Frontages or under provisions of the Local Government Act or relating to the sale of residence Areas under section 36 of the Mines Act.
