Full description
This series is a collection of volumes containing records created between 1874 and 1884 by the Public Works Department (VA 669) to record details relating to the construction of the Melbourne Law Courts. It is apparent that the work was undertaken by contractors, but the Department had a responsibility to determine the contract details and to have oversight of the progress of the work. These records are those created and kept by the Quantity Surveyor and the Supervising Inspector of Works. These records were probably not all created and kept as a distinct series, but were assembled later into the current collection.
Records in this series are:
- Quantity Surveyors Abstract Books of Quantities of Materials used.
- Quantity Surveyors Abstract Books of Day Labour and Materials
- Memoranda between the Quantity Surveyor, the Supervising Inspector of Works and the Inspector-General of Public Works.
- Monthly Returns from the Quantity Surveyor to the Inspector-General of the materials used and their cost,
- Dimensions and Schedules of Quantities for portions of the building,
- Specification for Fittings for the Second Nisi Perins Court.
Details of the contracts let for the construction, equipping and fitting of the Melbourne Law Courts may be found in VPRS 979 Contract Books, VPRS 981 Register of Contracts Accepted and Gazetted and in VPRS 967 Inward Correspondence Files.
