Full description

Establishment and Functions

Acting on recommendations from the History Advisory Council of Victoria, the Premier established Victoria's 150th Anniversary Celebration Citizens' Council in 1980. Administrative support for the Council was provided by the Premier's Department (VA 2717). Its role was to develop a program of celebrations to commemorate the 150th anniversary of permanent settlement in Victoria by Europeans. Sir John Holland was appointed Chairman of the Council.

An Executive Committee which carried out day to day administration was established and was responsible for the planning, co-ordination and management of the overall program of activities. Mr. John Birrell was appointed Executive Director.

The programs for the Anniversary were developed by eighteen specialist committees which were established in 1980. The Chairman of each Committee reported to the Citizens' Council through the Secretariat and the Executive Council.
