Establishment and Functions

The Victorian Tourism Commission was established under the provisions of the Victorian Tourism Commission Act (No. 9834) which was proclaimed on 11 May 1983. The Commission was an amalgamation of the Ministry for Tourism (VA 2879) and the Victorian Government Travel Authority (VA 2990) and assumed responsibility for those functions previously administered by these agencies.

The major responsibilities of the Commission are:

to promote Victoria as a tourist destination both interstate and overseas
to improve and develop tourist facilities in Victoria including the acquisition of property
to encourage the development of and investment in the tourism industry in Victoria
to provide financial assistance to individuals, government and non government agencies
to provide information and travel services.

In 1986 the Commission inherited responsibility for the management of Mt Buffalo Chalet from the State Transport Authority (VA 1038). This responsibility is vested in Victour Properties Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Commission which undertakes the ownership and operation of tourist accommodation establishments, tourist attractions and other facilities.

The Victorian Tourism Commission has variously reported to the Minister for Economic Development (1983); Industry, Commerce and Technology (1983-1985); and Industry, Technology and Resources (1985-1987). In 1987 the Minister for Tourism assumed responsibility for the Commission.
