Containing over 4000 prints on 16mm film and video, this collection consists of moving image material produced by the Victorian Department of Agriculture from the 1950s to the 1980s. Comprising an extensive range of documentaries, educational and scientific films, and footage on rural life and the practice and technology of farming in Victoria, the collection is of high historical significance. It includes geographically and culturally important footage of regional Victoria and Melbourne. Subjects range from managing insect plagues and adverse weather to beekeeping, irrigation, the Royal Tour, the Melbourne Show, histories of farming practices and social comment. Many titles have high historical importance over and above their value as historical documents of agriculture in Victoria. From many perspectives, this is an important collection, not just because it records Victoria's agricultural heritage, but also because many of our filmmakers learnt their craft in making these films. There are treasures to be uncovered in the camera original footage.Notes
